A community-wide event to address environmental challenges tied to improper disposal of unwanted household pharmaceuticals

 

Unwanted Household Pharmaceutical Collection Day Sponsored by the Tompkins County Coalition for Safe Medication Disposal, March 6, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., TCAT, 737 Willow Ave., Ithaca Media contact information: Ed Gottlieb, 273-8381.

A community-wide event to address environmental challenges tied to improper disposal of unwanted household pharmaceuticals is scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit (TCAT), 737 Willow Ave., Ithaca.

Designed for everyone with no-longer-needed household medications - and concerns about how to get rid of them safely - the inaugural Unwanted Household Pharmaceutical Collection Day is sponsored by the Tompkins County Coalition for Safe Medication Disposal, made up of representatives from area governments, non-profit organizations, higher education and private businesses.

The secure and convenient "drive-thru" opportunity at TCAT's headquarters is free and open to the public, and will be supervised by pharmacists. No appointments are necessary, and participants are asked to leave medications in original containers and mark out personal information.

The following will be accepted at the March 6 event:

Prescription drugs including controlled substances, pills, powders, liquids, inhalers, Epipens, and non-prescription drugs and  pet medicines.

What will not be accepted on March 6:

Mercury thermometers, mercurochrome, other mercury products,  sharps (syringes, needles and diabetic lancets) and other hazardous waste
