SUMMARY:HSC Forum: Centering the Voices of Tompkins County's Unhoused Youth
DESCRIPTION:Youth participatory action research centers the voices of young people with lived experiences in the research process. It is an essential component of the Independent Living Survey which focuses on understanding and addressing unhoused youth and vulnerable populations’ needs across Tompkins County. The Independent Living Survey has been conducted every four to five years since 2003. The 2024 iteration was expanded to explore precursors to homelessness\, COVID-19 impacts\, and mental health among youth experiencing housing insecurity. \nMembers of ACT for Youth (including undergraduate research assistants); community stakeholders\, from organizations like The Learning Web; and young people who have experienced homelessness collaborated on survey design\, data collection\, data interpretation\, and presentations of findings. The combined effort creates a better understanding and shared information regarding issues such as housing\, food security\, employment\, education\, involvement in public systems\, safety\, strengths\, and goals for the future. \nDuring this talk\, members of the collaborative research team will share about the survey process\, outcomes\, and implications for the community. \nPanelists:\nAmanda Purington Drake ’04\, M.P.S. ’09\, Ph.D. ’22; ACT for Youth\nVicki Baum; ACT for Youth\nBrian Maley: ACT for Youth\nYouth Researchers; The Learning Web \nThis HSC Forum is co-sponsored by the Tompkins County Homeless & Housing Task Force.\nHSC Forums are free and open to the public. Pre-registration is requested. \nThis event is in-person only.\nMasks are optional at in-person events

SUMMARY:HSC Workshop Series: BEE Clear - Setting the Radical Minimum Standard with Deb Mohlenhoff
DESCRIPTION:BEE Clear: Setting the Radical Minimum Standard\nwith Deb Mohlenhoff\nWednesday\, September 30\, 2026\n10:00 am – 1:00 pm\nIn-person at the Tompkins County Public Library\, Borg Warner Room\n$70 – pre-registration is required \n\n“Radical” might sound dramatic – but when it comes to accountability – it’s actually the most important thing to be defined. Radical generally refers to something that is fundamental\, extreme\, or goes straight to the root of a matter. Most leaders can describe what “amazing” looks like. Almost none can tell you what the floor is — the actual\, non-negotiable minimum that has to be true before anything else matters. That gap is where accountability goes to die\, and where good employees start guessing at what “doing my best” even means. \nThis isn’t about writing SMART goals. Using BEE Strategies’ signature BUILD‑ENGAGE‑EXECUTE approach\, you’ll build a standard you actually wrote yourself — one made to stick\, not to land in the recycle bin next week. Bring a real accountability challenge or employee issue you’re wrestling with; we’ll work through it live. \nYou’ll walk out with: \n\nThe Radical Minimum Standard Worksheet — draft the real floor for your team or role in about 20 minutes flat\nThe Standard-Setting Conversation Guide — turn your draft into a standard your team helped build\, not one you handed down\nThe Accountability Check-In Tool — a five-minute recurring habit that makes “we said we would” actually mean something\n\nLearn more about this workshop \nThis event is in-person only and will not be recorded. \nMasks are optional at in-person events.\n \nAll registration sales are final.

SUMMARY:HSC Workshop Series: Leading Through Transition - Strategic Storytelling with Laura Colket
DESCRIPTION:Leading Through Transition: Strategic Storytelling for Organizational Evolution\nwith Laura Colket\nWednesday\, October 14\, 2026\n10:00 am – 1:00 pm\nIn-person at the Tompkins County Public Library\, Borg Warner Room\n$70 – pre-registration is required \nNonprofits today are being asked to do the impossible: hold steady through funding volatility\, generational leadership handoffs\, and a rapidly shifting cultural and political landscape — all while staying true to the mission that got them here. It’s tempting to treat storytelling as a communications function\, something reserved for the annual report or the year-end appeal. But story is also one of the most underused strategic tools an organization has for navigating change from the inside out. \nThrough this workshop\, participants will learn how to: \n\nUtilize storytelling as a diagnostic tool to surface which organizational practices and norms still serve the mission — and which were built for a different era\nTell their own story of leadership in relation to their organization\, developing a clearer understanding of how and why they lead — and what that means for leading through this particular moment of transition\nFacilitate a storytelling process to build community and help people and teams sift through the disorientation of transition together\nTranslate that internal narrative work into external storytelling that humanizes the organization for funders\, board members\, and the community — helping people see not just what the work is\, but who it’s for\n\nParticipants leave with a practical framework for facilitating this work inside their own organizations\, plus tools adaptable for both internal culture-building and external communications and fundraising. \nLearn more about this workshop \nThis event is in-person only and will not be recorded. \nMasks are optional at in-person events.\n \nAll registration sales are final.
